An Update from Silvano!

My name is Silvano Ngacha , a beneficiary of READ org. I am a third year student at Egerton University, pursuing a Bsc. in Computer Science. I joined Egerton on 6th-01-2012 after finishing my O-level studies at By Grace Disabled and Orphans Center. Having been brought from a humble background ,I never imagined that one day I would be a Computer Scientist. Thanks to READ org. for making my dream a reality.

Being a Computer Scientist student comes with a price, because it is a very challenging and a demanding course. Computer Science is a science of problem solving. We learn how to solve problems critically, formulate network structures, analyze and design algorithms and understand complex systems through the lens of computational models. This requires precision, creativity, and careful reasoning. This has immensely increased my life problem solving skills. I have also gained experience in group work, project administration and management. Although the course is challenging, I have a cumulative of 67 points and I am hoping to graduate with a first class honor degree. I have managed to score the high points because READ org. supports my education and my daily expenses.

My principal area of interest in Computer Science is in Computer Networking. I am therefore looking forward to becoming a certified network administrator. I also have interest in computer programming. So far, I have learnt the following programming languages: C, C++, JAVA, PYTHON and PROLOG. In addition, I have also mastered server scripting languages such as PHP and SQL , as well as web scripting languages such as JAVASCRIPT,AJAX and JQUERY. I have also done a course in web designing using HTML 2,4,XHTML,CSS and CSS 2.I am now learning how to develop android applications using JAVA and XML and also updating my skills in web designing by learning HTML 5 and CSS 3. I like software design and development since it is more practical than theory, always figuring out how to solve a particular problem and implementing the solution using a computer software.

Academics aside, I’m a member of  Egerton University Computer science students association and Nyeri Egerton University students association (Project Co-ordinator) . I have also joined swimming, debating and Red Cross clubs . These clubs have given me a chance to participate in community-based initiatives such as visiting children’s homes, prisons, rehabilitation centers ,visiting near-by secondary schools, participating in various awareness campaigns and also planting trees. I have also  been able to make friends from diverse faculties ,cultures and fat the same time creating a network within my field of study.

During the next semester, i am expected to have a four -month internship program which is a partial fulfillment of the requirements of a Bachelor degree in Computer Science. I am hoping to be an intern at East African Breweries Limited, which is one of the leading companies in Kenya. After completing my industrial attachment, I will be back to school to complete my fourth year of study. I am hoping to graduate in Nov of 2015 with a First Class Honor degree.

I wish to extend my  sincere gratitude to all well wishers for your generous financial support. I do promise that I will never disappoint you and I will continue to work hard. I thank you all for your kindness, which has provided me with hope and courage to live a better life.

Thank you once again for your generous support.
